Overview
Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It is known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee, and spice plantations as well as wildlife. National parks like Eravikulam and Periyar, plus Wayanad and other sanctuaries, are home to elephants, langur monkeys and tigers. Kerala is also famous for several things like Ayurveda, houseboats, spices, the town of Munnar, eco-tourism, Kathakali dance, coconut oil, the Aranmula mirror, the festival of Thrissur Pooram, the practice of Kalaripayattu and more.
One funny fact about Kerala is, the state is one of the rich, 100% literate and healthy civil states in India and it has the highest per capita alcohol consumption over any state in India at over 8 litres per person per year. The people of Kerala are renowned for their physical attractiveness, with both men and women considered to be among the most attractive in the country. It is not entirely clear why this is, but some say it may be due to the climate or diet in Kerala. The people of Kerala, known as Malayali (people speaking Malayalam language), are polygenetic and belong to different ethnic groups and religions. The Census of India does not recognise racial or ethnic groups within India.
Some of the most popular food items from Kerala are Puttu (Puttu means "portioned" in Tamil and Malayalam. It is made of steamed cylinders of ground rice layered with coconut shavings, sometimes with a sweet or Savory filling on the inside.), Appam (made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk, traditionally cooked in an appachatti, a deep pan similar in shape to a wok), Sadya (A banquet in Malayalam. Sadya is typically served as a traditional feast for Onam, the state festival of Kerala and Vishu, Idiyappam (rice flour pressed into noodles, laid into a flat disc-like shape and steamed), Avial (a thick stew of usually 13 vegetables commonly found in the Western Ghats and coconut, seasoned with coconut oil and curry leaves) other food specialities include Malabar biryani, Fish moolie and vegetable stew.
